I just found out I was pregnant, but then saw my husband with another woman at our cafe.

My hands trembled, the tiny stick a white beacon in the dim bathroom light.

Positive.

Two lines.

I blinked, then blinked again, a laugh bubbling up from somewhere deep inside me, quickly followed by a rush of tears.

I was pregnant.

I just found out I was pregnant, but then saw my husband with another woman at our cafe.

After months of trying, of quiet hopes and whispered prayers, it was finally real.

A tiny life, growing inside me, a part of me and a part of David.

My husband.

My partner.

My everything.

I imagined his face when I told him, the shock, then the overwhelming joy, the way he’d pull me into a tight hug.

We’d been talking about this for so long, dreaming of a little one to complete our family.

I wanted the moment to be perfect, unforgettable.

Our favorite cafe, "The Daily Grind," immediately came to mind.

It was our place, where we had our first date, where he proposed, where we spent countless Saturday mornings planning our future.

I carefully wrapped the pregnancy test in a small silk scarf, tucking it into my purse.

My heart pounded with a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation as I grabbed my keys.

The walk felt impossibly long, each step a countdown to the biggest surprise of our lives.

I pictured him there, probably buried in his laptop, nursing his usual black coffee.

A gentle smile played on my lips.

I rehearsed the words in my head, how I'd whisper, "Honey, we're going to be parents."

As I approached The Daily Grind, the familiar warmth of its brick facade greeted me.

I peered through the large front window, searching for him amongst the usual crowd.

And then I saw him.

He wasn't alone.

My breath hitched in my throat, a cold knot forming in my stomach.

A woman sat opposite him, her hand resting casually over his on the table.

She was laughing, a bright, clear sound that somehow cut through the cafe’s gentle hum.

David was looking at her, not with his usual focused intensity for work, but with an intimacy I recognized, an intimacy that belonged to us.

My mind scrambled, trying to make sense of the scene, to rationalize it away.

A colleague? A client?

But the way her fingers intertwined with his, the way her head leaned ever so slightly towards him, spoke a different language.

My hands, still clutching my purse, started to shake uncontrollably again.

This time, there was no joy.

Only a sickening dread.

I watched, frozen, as he leaned forward, whispering something that made her giggle, her eyes sparkling.

He reached across the table, gently brushing a stray piece of hair from her face, his touch achingly tender.

That was my touch.

That was my David.

My body felt like it was encased in ice, a sudden, crushing weight pressing down on my chest.

I stumbled inside, the noise and warmth of the cafe hitting me like a physical blow.

Every head turned as I entered, but my eyes were locked on them, their little tableau of stolen affection.

He saw me then, his face draining of all color, his smile vanishing as if wiped clean.

The woman looked up, her expression shifting from bubbly happiness to mild confusion.

"David," I managed, my voice a strangled whisper, barely audible above the cafe’s ambient noise.

He slowly withdrew his hand from hers, as if burned.

"Sarah? What are you doing here?" he asked, his voice strained, a poorly veiled attempt at normalcy.

"What am I doing here?" I repeated, my voice rising, raw with disbelief and pain.

"I came to tell you something, David."

I pulled the silk scarf from my purse, the small, plastic stick now feeling like a lead weight.

I placed it on the table between them, the two pink lines a stark accusation.

"I'm pregnant," I choked out, tears finally streaming down my face, blurring the horror before me.

The woman gasped, her hand flying to her own stomach instinctively.

David stared at the test, then at me, then at her, a panicked desperation in his eyes.

"Sarah, I... I can explain," he stammered, his voice barely a whisper.

"Explain what?" I cried, my voice now a broken sob, louder than I intended.

"Explain this?"

I pointed at the woman, whose face was now a mixture of shock and dawning comprehension.

She looked at me, then at David, then back at me, her eyes wide with unshed tears.

"You… you didn't tell her?" she asked David, her voice trembling.

He just shook his head, looking utterly defeated, utterly broken.

"Tell me what?" I demanded, my chest heaving, the air thick with unspoken betrayal.

The woman looked at me, her voice soft but clear, cutting through me like a knife.

"I'm also pregnant, Sarah. And David is the father. I’m due next month."

The world spun.

The cafe, the people, the noise, it all dissolved into a deafening roar in my ears.

My knees buckled, and I instinctively reached out, clutching the edge of a nearby chair to steady myself.

Next month.

Next month.

He had another life, another baby, another future he’d built behind my back.

All this time, while we were trying, while I was dreaming, he was living a double life.

The betrayal was so profound, so absolute, it felt like a physical assault.

My baby, our baby, the one growing inside me, suddenly felt like a lonely, hopeful flicker in a vast, cold darkness.

I stared at him, at the man I loved, the father of my child, and saw a stranger.

A hollow ache spread through my entire being, deeper than any physical pain.

I couldn't breathe, couldn't think, couldn't even stand there for another second.

Without another word, I turned, the tears blinding my path, and stumbled out of The Daily Grind, leaving my shattered dreams scattered across its floor.

The cold air outside bit at my skin, but it was nothing compared to the chill in my heart.

My baby.

Our baby.

What now?
